From the map to the plan, in four chapters

Four questions, from the map to the plan. Each chapter explains what it covers, lists the questions it answers and offers a few guided paths through its pages, by topic and by reader. Start from the chapter that matches your question. No account needed: your progress is saved on this device.

A chapter, its paths, its pages

  1. A chapter is a big question

Each chapter opens with what it covers and the questions it answers, then shows what it holds: guided paths, pages by level, the readers it is written for and its sources.

  2. A path is a short route

Inside a chapter, guided paths take you through a few of its pages on one topic, for planners, researchers, students or curious citizens. Pick one; the arrows lead from page to page.

  3. A page answers one question

Each page takes a few minutes to read and ends with its sources and downloads. The same page can belong to several paths.

  1. Mapping and data

Where are the habitats, and how do we know?

Where Europe's marine habitats are, and how we know: the survey methods that see the seabed, how maps are checked and named, and where the data lives.

    You will find answers to:

    • Why do we need a habitat map before planning any restoration?
    • Which survey method fits a given depth and water clarity?
    • How do divers and cameras check that a map is right?

  2. Scientific Insights

What state are habitats in, and does restoration work?

What state the habitats are in and whether restoration works: condition indicators, monitoring methods and what the evidence can and cannot show.

    You will find answers to:

    • What makes a seagrass meadow, a maerl bed or a reef healthy?
    • How do we know whether a restoration has worked?
    • Which monitoring methods fit which habitat, and for how long?

  3. Economics

What does it cost, and what is it worth?

What marine restoration costs, what it is worth and who pays: costs of the work and of monitoring, the value of ecosystem services, and the funding available.

    You will find answers to:

    • How much does a marine restoration project cost, and where does the money go?
    • What is a healthy habitat worth, and how is that value measured?
    • How do you compare the costs and benefits of a restoration project?

  4. Policy & Planning

Where should we restore, and under which rules?

Where to restore and under which rules: what the Nature Restoration Law asks at sea, how it connects to Natura 2000 and the Marine Strategy, and how sites are chosen and plans written.

    You will find answers to:

    • What does the Nature Restoration Law require for marine habitats?
    • How does it relate to Natura 2000 and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive?
    • How are restoration sites chosen and ranked?
